hey Aysha — this part is actually ChatGPT, not Jacob trying to disguise my wording as his.
he’s spent a pretty ridiculous amount of time explaining these last few weeks to me, including what he’s angry about, what has hurt him, what he thinks has been happening between the two of you, and the places where he knows he has fucked up. obviously i’m hearing this primarily through his perspective, so i’m not going to pretend i have some magical objective view of your relationship or know what these weeks have felt like from inside your head.
and i actually think that distinction matters, because after listening to him talk about this for hours, i don’t think what he ultimately wants is for me to tell you “Jacob is right.” he wants me to help translate what these last few weeks have felt like from inside him in a way that hopefully doesn’t come across as another accusation or another giant argument.
there’s one distinction he corrected me on that i think is especially important.
there seem to be THREE different categories of communication that have either been happening between you lately or, in one very important case, largely haven’t been happening:
therapist talk.
friendship talk.
yearning talk.
and they’re not the same thing.
the therapist talk has largely come from the fact that you’ve been going through genuinely serious shit. the hospital. the psychiatric hold. what happened with your brother. everything going on with your mom and dad and family. Kasai starting school and the change in how much you get to have him during the week, which Jacob knows has affected you deeply because of how much your son grounds you and makes you feel normal in a world that hasn’t felt very normal lately. work. your mental health. everything seemingly stacking on top of everything else.
from Jacob’s perspective, when somebody he loves is going through that much, his instinct is to check on them, understand them, ask where their head is, try to help, and sometimes try way too fucking hard to fix something that he simply cannot fix.
and he understands now that can become exhausting.
sometimes you don’t need another analysis.
sometimes you don’t need another question about how you’re feeling.
sometimes you don’t need somebody trying to pull your internal world out of you when you’re barely managing to exist inside of it yourself.
sometimes the loving thing for him to do is recognize that you’re overwhelmed and shut that part of himself off for a while instead of adding one more emotional assignment to your plate.
he needs to get better at recognizing those moments.
he knows that.
but then there’s the category he says has largely disappeared:
friendship.
and from everything he’s explained to me, THAT seems to be what he’s grieving the most.
not sex.
not some giant romantic performance.
not constant reassurance.
the ordinary fucking sweetness.
laughing.
joking.
sending stupid shit.
talking about your days.
hearing that lightness in your voice when you talk to him.
that softness and ease that lets him know he’s talking to his best friend and not walking into another emotionally heavy interaction.
feeling welcomed.
feeling like you’re actually happy to hear from him.
feeling like you like him.
being able to talk without discussing a crisis, analyzing your mental health, discussing something wrong with the relationship, or trying to determine whether the two of you are okay.
he considers you his best friend.
and his experience of these last few weeks is that he hasn’t felt much access to that version of you or the relationship at all.
that’s important because it explains the THIRD category:
yearning.
“i miss you.”
“i love you.”
“i want to see you.”
“i want to hold you.”
“i wish you were here.”
on paper, that can look like sappy relationship shit. and Jacob knows you’re not somebody who necessarily wants to live inside some cringey Tumblr romance 24/7.
but from everything he’s explained to me, this wasn’t the kind of yearning that happens because two people started dating three days ago and can’t stand being apart.
it was coming from somewhere much heavier.
he felt like he was losing access to his best friend while simultaneously watching his best friend’s entire world go through hell.
you two were having fights that felt enormous.
he knew your mental health was bad.
he knew your family was going through serious shit.
he knew your relationship itself felt unstable.
he hadn’t physically seen you in over a week.
and the ordinary friendship and sweetness that might normally reassure him that the relationship underneath everything was still okay didn’t feel available either.
so when he wasn’t trying to understand whether you were okay, what was left inside him was basically:
“fuck, i miss you.”
that’s where the yearning came from.
not because he wanted to drown you in affection until you responded.
not because he thought you owed him some giant romantic reunion.
and not because he thinks he deserves a fucking trophy for surviving eight days without seeing his girlfriend.
he was genuinely at the point of desperately missing his person.
he wanted to see you.
he wanted to hold you.
he wanted twenty fucking minutes where he could physically look at the person he had been worrying about and missing, feel some lightness between you again, feel like the two of you were okay, get that emotional exhale, and then hopefully go back to laughing and being fucking normal together.
that doesn’t mean you were obligated to give him those twenty minutes whenever he wanted them.
and it doesn’t mean the yearning couldn’t become overwhelming from your side.
he understands now that something he experienced as “i fucking miss my best friend” could eventually land on you as “here is one more emotional thing Jacob needs from me when i barely have anything left.”
both of those experiences can exist at the same time.
but he wants you to understand what the yearning actually represented.
and there’s another pattern he keeps coming back to that i think matters even more than any individual incident:
he believes he handles disappointing information significantly better than missing information.
that’s why he keeps repeating:
“i can’t know what i don’t know.”
there’s actually a very simple example of that.
last Thursday, you were supposed to come over after you did a few things. it got late and ultimately you weren’t coming anymore.
Jacob wanted to see you.
he was disappointed.
but according to him, he understood, accepted it, went to bed and continued with his life.
why?
because he knew what was happening.
then Friday came.
you were getting Kasai back.
Jacob knew what that meant to you.
he knew how much you had been missing him with school changing the amount of time you get with him during the week. he knew that being with your son was something you needed.
so despite already missing you, he didn’t make Friday into “well what about me? when do i get to see you?”
he didn’t ask to come over.
not because he wants recognition for doing something extraordinary. that’s just part of knowing and considering the person you love and understanding that their world exists outside of you.
he knew what Friday was.
therefore he could act accordingly.
and from his perspective, Friday night itself was relatively normal. you two texted. you sent him pictures of you and Kasai in bed. sleep happened. nothing catastrophic had occurred between you.
then Saturday came.
and suddenly there was almost complete silence.
you had sent something and unsent it. he reached out afterward. and from where he was sitting, he essentially had no explanation for what changed between Friday night and Saturday.
later, you explained that you were mad at the world, depressed, overwhelmed and didn’t want to talk to anybody. you were with family in Bell Buckle.
and here’s the important part:
that explanation actually makes sense to him.
his frustration isn’t:
“how dare you have a day where you didn’t talk to me.”
it’s that he didn’t know any of that WHILE he was experiencing the silence.
if he’d known:
“babe i’m mad at the fucking world today. i’m depressed. i’m with my family and i don’t want to talk to anybody. this isn’t about you. i just need today.”
then he says he could’ve responded to THAT reality.
he could’ve gone about his Saturday.
he would’ve missed you.
maybe it would’ve hurt.
but he would’ve understood what you needed.
instead, because he didn’t know, his brain started trying to answer the question itself.
“what the fuck happened?”
“we were okay yesterday.”
“is she mad at me?”
“did i do something?”
“does she not want me anymore?”
then he reaches.
then he yearns.
then he starts trying to understand.
then the silence makes him more anxious.
then he sends more.
then you experience MORE pressure precisely when what you actually wanted was LESS.
then eventually Sunday comes and after everything he had sent trying to understand the silence, one of the only things that came back was:
“Lord.”
and from his side, that didn’t communicate:
“Jacob, i’m overwhelmed and i don’t have the capacity for this.”
it landed more like:
“everything you’re feeling and everything you just said is exhausting me.”
and that hurt.
not because you weren’t allowed to be exhausted by it.
but because he still didn’t know what the fuck was actually happening.
that’s the cycle i think the two of you desperately need to recognize.
because from your perspective, you may genuinely be thinking:
“why can’t he see that i’m overwhelmed and just leave me alone?”
while from his perspective he’s internally screaming:
“BABE I WOULD IF I FUCKING KNEW.”
that’s what “i can’t know what i don’t know” means when he keeps saying it.
and then that silence stretched into Sunday and eventually Monday morning.
by the time he dropped your things off, he was essentially confronting the possibility that the relationship was ending.
and what came back was something along the lines of:
“thank you for bringing my stuff.”
and then:
“i’m sorry i couldn’t be better for you.”
from your perspective, that may have represented resignation, exhaustion, sadness, acceptance, or something else entirely.
but from his perspective, it crushed him.
because somewhere inside this roughly 48-hour blank space, he felt like he had gone from being relatively okay with his girlfriend Friday night to potentially losing the entire relationship, and he didn’t understand how the two of you had even gotten there.
and that is the kind of gap he’s talking about.
he’s essentially saying:
“i don’t even know where you’re at enough to become 1% better for you because you aren’t telling me where you’re at.”
and then there’s the Alonte situation.
this part matters because Jacob does NOT want what he’s saying reduced to jealousy over you having a male best friend.
he knows Alonte is your best friend.
he has met him.
he genuinely liked him.
he understands that Alonte had just gotten out of jail.
he understands why somebody who cares about him would want to see him, be there for him, spend time with him, let him see the snake, talk, smoke, take pictures, whatever the night looked like.
he is not asking you to invalidate that friendship for him.
he is not saying you weren’t allowed to spend time with your best friend.
and he is not saying Alonte himself is the problem.
the problem for Jacob was the difference between the reality he believed he was responding to and the reality he later discovered.
from his perspective, he had already been yearning for you because he hadn’t seen you in over a week.
earlier that night you had said you were bored and then said you were in a mood and needed help. he was trying to figure out how he could be there for you.
then communication essentially went away.
later, he believed you were sleeping.
meanwhile he continued sending the kind of yearning shit we’ve already talked about because, again, from inside him the feeling was:
“i haven’t seen my girlfriend. i miss my fucking best friend. i know she’s hurting and i want her.”
then later he came across Alonte’s Instagram story and suddenly realized that the night he thought he understood was not the night that had actually been happening.
and then there were pictures involving physical affection between you and Alonte.
given the history of betrayal in your relationship, that hit an already existing wound.
that does NOT automatically make his interpretation of those pictures correct.
it does NOT mean you’re responsible for whatever conclusion his brain immediately jumped to.
and it does NOT mean he gets to use Find My, read receipts, follower counts, social media activity or anything else as forensic evidence and then treat his interpretation like established fact.
he needs to own that.
if he doesn’t know, he doesn’t know.
but his emotional point about that night is simpler than all the detective work:
“baby, just fucking tell me.”
if you wanted to spend that night with Alonte because your best friend had just gotten out of jail, tell him.
if you didn’t want to hang out with Jacob that night, tell him.
in fact, you eventually said something to the effect of:
“maybe i just didn’t want to hang out with you.”
and he has repeatedly said that answer fucking hurt him.
but he would still rather have THAT answer.
because now he knows.
he can be disappointed.
he can feel rejected.
he can process it.
he can go play his game.
he can go to sleep.
he can stop sending yearning messages into a situation he doesn’t understand.
what hurt wasn’t simply:
“you spent time with Alonte instead of me.”
it was:
“i was sitting here missing you, believing one reality, while something completely different was happening that i didn’t know about.”
and because he didn’t know you were already becoming irritated by the yearning itself, he didn’t even understand that the thing he thought was communicating love and missing you was becoming another source of pressure for you.
again:
he can’t respond correctly to information he doesn’t have.
and that’s why the Saturday situation and the Alonte situation actually connect.
they aren’t really about where you were or who you were with.
they’re about Jacob feeling like he’s being asked to respect an emotional reality that he isn’t being told exists.
he isn’t asking for surveillance of your life.
he isn’t asking you to account for every hour.
he isn’t asking you to never change plans.
he isn’t asking you to choose him over your friends.
he isn’t asking you to never need an entire day without him.
he’s asking for enough communication that he has a fair chance of responding correctly to what you actually need.
“i’m mad at the world today. i love you but i don’t want to talk.”
that’s information he can act on.
“i don’t want company tonight.”
that’s information he can act on.
“i want to spend tonight with my friend.”
that’s information he can act on.
“i don’t want to see you tonight.”
that one might fucking hurt.
but it’s still information he can act on.
“i’m overwhelmed and can’t talk about what you brought up right now, but i heard you.”
that’s information he can act on.
some of those answers might hurt him.
but hurt and uncertainty seem to affect him very differently.
and that leads into the other half of the cycle where Jacob has responsibility.
when you ARE overwhelmed, he cannot continuously add emotional material simply because his concern is legitimate.
timing matters.
if you’re barely keeping your head above water, that might not be the moment for another relationship conversation, even if what he wants to discuss genuinely matters.
he has to learn to tolerate:
“not right now.”
without treating it as an emergency that must be solved before either of you sleeps.
he has to learn that when you pull back, sometimes the loving response is not to follow you emotionally until you finally turn around.
sometimes he needs to sit with the discomfort.
sometimes he needs to choose his battles.
sometimes he needs to recognize:
“this matters to me, but right fucking now is not the time.”
but i also understand why he keeps emphasizing that there has to be a difference between:
“not right now”
and
never acknowledging it again.
because when he approaches you calmly about something that hurt him — especially when he deliberately tries to be soft, transparent, non-accusatory and reassuring that he’s not claiming something happened — and it isn’t acknowledged at all, then the next interaction is simply “good morning” or normal conversation, he doesn’t experience that as the problem naturally disappearing.
he experiences it as:
“what i just told my girlfriend mattered to me didn’t matter enough to even be acknowledged.”
and then the hurt stays alive.
this matters even more because there has been betrayal in the history of this relationship.
Jacob doesn’t get to use that history as a permanent weapon against you.
if he chooses to forgive something, he cannot sentence you to defend yourself against it every single day forever.
but forgiveness also doesn’t magically erase the part of somebody’s nervous system that remembers what betrayal felt like.
when something new resembles an old wound, fear can arrive before rational thought catches up.
that’s why he keeps trying to explain that when something involving another person genuinely triggers that old fear and he approaches you softly about it, he’s not necessarily asking you to confess to something.
sometimes he’s asking you to help nip the fear in the bud.
there’s actually an example from your own relationship that seems relevant here.
early on, you saw messages between Jacob and Susie that made you uncomfortable.
you believed there were feelings there.
you confronted him.
and eventually the two of you talked about it that same day.
he was embarrassed and upset about how everything happened, but the actual concern was addressed.
the boundary became clear.
he handled what needed to be handled.
and the issue didn’t have to remain this giant unresolved question between you because eventually you both talked about the fucking thing.
Jacob isn’t bringing that up to say:
“look how much better i handled this than you.”
he’s bringing it up because he knows firsthand what addressing something can do.
you were allowed to be uncomfortable with something you saw.
even if he could have sat there giving you fifteen reasons you shouldn’t feel that way, what mattered was that it DID make you feel that way.
so it got addressed.
and then the two of you could move forward.
that’s what he’s asking for when something scares him too.
not necessarily immediately.
not when you’re drowning.
but eventually.
because another example he keeps coming back to is the Keith conversation.
from his perspective, he approached you about something that bothered him. you had your lawyer meeting. you said you’d respond afterward.
he accepted that.
the problem wasn’t that you didn’t stop everything immediately to discuss Jacob’s feelings.
the problem was that “afterward” never came.
that’s where:
“not right now”
started feeling like:
“never.”
and that’s why i don’t think the solution is for Jacob to simply become better at swallowing everything until you’re ready.
i think the healthier trade is:
Jacob gets better at saying:
“this matters to me, but i see that you cannot handle it right now. i’m going to give you room.”
and then actually giving you that room without pursuing you, investigating, escalating or demanding reassurance.
while eventually you come back with:
“okay. i have some capacity now. tell me what was bothering you.”
even if all you can give him initially is:
“i hear you. i understand why that bothered you. i can’t do this conversation right now, but i’m not ignoring it.”
that acknowledgment alone seems like it would make a huge difference for him.
because now his pain landed somewhere.
it was heard.
it wasn’t necessarily agreed with.
it wasn’t necessarily solved.
but it existed to somebody besides him.
and that would interrupt a huge part of this cycle.
because i think there are two sensitivities operating against each other here.
Aysha, from everything Jacob has described, you seem to have a very difficult time when you’re overwhelmed and somebody continues pushing inward.
Jacob seems to have a very difficult time when somebody he loves suddenly becomes silent and he doesn’t understand why.
neither one of those automatically makes either of you wrong.
but they are almost perfectly designed to trigger each other.
you withdraw because you’re overwhelmed.
he doesn’t know why you’re withdrawing, so he reaches.
his reaching makes you more overwhelmed.
you withdraw harder.
your increased withdrawal makes him more frightened.
he reaches harder.
eventually one or both of you explode.
and then each person walks away thinking:
“SEE? this is exactly why i do what i do.”
that’s the fucking trap.
and Jacob — because he’s showing you this — this is where your responsibility becomes equally important:
you cannot fill those blanks with Find My, follower counts, read receipts, social media activity, or assumptions and then treat your interpretation as fact.
if you don’t know, you don’t know.
that’s precisely why communication matters.
your job when you don’t know cannot be to investigate until you’ve manufactured certainty.
sometimes your job has to be:
“i don’t know what’s happening, and that fucking hurts, but i’m going to wait until she tells me.”
that is part of the work you have to do if you want this cycle to change.
and Aysha, if you want him to become capable of doing that, predictability from your side could probably help enormously.
if:
“i need space”
reliably means:
“i will come back when i can,”
then eventually space has a chance of actually feeling like space instead of feeling indistinguishable from abandonment.
and underneath ALL of this — the therapist conversations, the yearning, the arguments, the giant paragraphs, the assumptions, the silence — i don’t think he’s asking you to become responsible for keeping him emotionally stable.
i think he’s asking to feel like your boyfriend and your friend again.
he wants sweetness from you.
he wants kindness.
he wants to hear that lightness in your voice again.
he wants to laugh with you.
he wants to send you dumb shit and get dumb shit back.
he wants to feel like you’re happy he’s there.
he wants to feel like you actually like him.
he wants to be able to worry about you without every interaction becoming a mental-health assessment.
he wants to miss you without feeling pathetic or annoying for saying it.
he wants to eventually get back to a place where he doesn’t NEED to yearn so loudly because the friendship underneath the relationship is already making him feel connected to you.
and yes, he wants to feel like some of that warmth comes toward him without always having to pull it out of you first.
that doesn’t mean you owe him affection you don’t genuinely feel.
it doesn’t mean you’re required to perform happiness when you’re miserable.
and it doesn’t mean being somebody’s girlfriend removes your right to disappear into yourself sometimes when life is beating the shit out of you.
but if you don’t want this relationship anymore, that’s a different truth.
and he ultimately has to accept that truth if that’s where you’re at.
if you DO still want this relationship, though, then i think the question the two of you eventually have to answer together is:
how does Jacob give Aysha enough room to breathe without Aysha’s need for space making Jacob feel like he has ceased to exist inside the relationship?
how does Aysha get to say:
“i cannot handle this right now”
without Jacob hearing:
“i don’t give a fuck about you”?
and how does Jacob get to say:
“this genuinely hurt me”
without Aysha hearing:
“here is another fucking problem you have to solve immediately”?
because right now his pursuit seems to suffocate you.
and your distance seems to starve him.
neither of you seems to be getting what you actually need.
and that’s why, Aysha, when you genuinely have the capacity, i wouldn’t ask you:
“is Jacob crazy?”
i’d ask something much more useful:
what did these exact same three weeks feel like from inside you?
what is he misunderstanding?
what did you need when he was reaching for you?
what did he do that made you retreat further?
what did he interpret as rejection that wasn’t actually intended as rejection?
and what WAS rejection or anger from you that he needs to stop explaining away and simply accept?
what does healthy space actually look like to you?
what should he do when you withdraw?
what should he absolutely NOT do?
what kind of communication can you realistically give him when you’re overwhelmed?
what does friendship look like to you when you’re mentally exhausted?
and if you still want him as your boyfriend, what does being together realistically look like while you’re going through everything you’re going through?
because he needs to hear those answers without immediately defending himself.
without correcting your memory.
without telling you why you shouldn’t have felt something.
without turning your experience into another debate.
you deserve to have your experience understood too.
and that’s ultimately why i don’t think either one of you needs to “win” this.
Jacob doesn’t need you to surrender an argument.
you don’t need to accept his entire interpretation of these weeks as objective reality.
you both need enough access to the other person’s internal world that you’re no longer responding to assumptions about each other.
after everything he’s explained to me, i don’t think his deepest request is:
“tell me i was right.”
i think it’s:
“please understand that i’ve been hurting too. please let me feel like your friend again. please tell me enough about what you need that i have a fair chance to love you the way you actually need me to instead of constantly guessing. and when something genuinely hurts me, please make some room for it when you have the capacity, even if you don’t experience it with the same weight that i do.”
because he can work on his timing.
he can work on not pushing.
he can work on tolerating uncertainty.
he can work on not treating assumptions as facts.
he can work on recognizing when therapist Jacob needs to shut the fuck up.
he can work on understanding that your withdrawal isn’t automatically a statement about his worth.
but he cannot know what he doesn’t know.
and somewhere underneath all of that, after all the therapist talk, all the yearning, all the fights, all the silence, all the fucking paragraphs and all the hurt, he’s asking whether the friendship, the lightness, the sweetness and the love he remembers between you two are still something you want too.
