How was the QWERTY keyboard layout invented

The QWERTY keyboard layout was invented in the 1870s by Christopher Latham Sholes, a newspaper editor and printer from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Contrary to popular belief, it wasn't designed to slow typists down, but rather to prevent mechanical jams in early typewriters.

Here is how the invention unfolded:

1. The Problem: Mechanical Jamming Early typewriters (like the "Sholes and Glidden" model) had typebars—metal arms with letters at the end—that struck an inked ribbon against the paper. If a typist pressed two keys in rapid succession that were next to each other on the machine's mechanism, the typebars would collide and get stuck. This forced the typist to stop, manually untangle the bars, and restart, which was frustrating and slow.

2. The Solution: Rearranging the Keys Sholes, along with his colleagues Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soulé, realized that the layout of the keys mattered. They didn't try to make the most common letters easiest to reach (which would have been the logical "efficiency" approach). Instead, they worked with a telegraphist named Edwin B. Hall to analyze the most common letter pairs (digraphs) in the English language, such as "TH," "ST," and "RE."

They then redesigned the layout to separate the typebars for these common pairs, spreading them out across the machine so that when a user hit them quickly, the arms were less likely to collide. This effectively forced the typist to alternate hands and space out their strikes, reducing the frequency of jams.

3. The "QWERTY" Result By 1873, Sholes finalized the layout that placed the letters Q-W-E-R-T-Y across the top row of letters. This arrangement was a compromise: it minimized jams while still allowing for a reasonable typing speed. The name "QWERTY" simply comes from the first six letters on the top row.

4. Commercial Success and Standardization In 1873, the Remington Arms Company (famous for firearms) licensed the design and began mass-producing the Remington No. 1 typewriter. Because Remington had the manufacturing power to dominate the market, the QWERTY layout became the industry standard.

5. Why It Stuck (Path Dependence) Even after mechanical typewriters were replaced by electric ones and eventually computers (where the jamming problem no longer existed), QWERTY remained dominant. This is a classic case of path dependence:

Training: Millions of people learned to type on QWERTY.

Hardware: Manufacturers continued to build keyboards with the same layout to match user expectations.

Inertia: Switching to a more efficient layout (like the Dvorak Simplified Keyboard, invented in the 1930s) would require retraining the entire workforce, which was too costly and disruptive.

Myth Busting: Did Sholes want to slow typists down? There is a persistent myth that Sholes intentionally arranged the keys to slow typists down so they wouldn't break the machines or to prevent telegraph operators from "stealing" the rhythm of Morse code. While the layout does separate common letters, the primary goal was mechanical reliability, not intentional inefficiency. The "slowing down" was a side effect of the mechanical constraints, not the design intent.
