Echoing Strike Warlock After PTR Nerfs in D2R 3.2 Update

After approximately three hours of testing on the PTR, it is clear that not every possible conclusion can be reached in that timeframe. However, there is a solid understanding of the relative power of Echoing Strike with the current nerfs. The overall takeaway may not be popular, but the nerfs appear warranted, make the build more interesting, better reward player investment, and may still leave the skill slightly too strong.

Testing Setup and Initial Impressions

Two primary testing scenarios were conducted. The first involved a budget setup using a full Horizont set with no charms and a base-level Partizan Insight. The second featured a previously optimized character that now needs to solve issues such as attack rating with very high-end gear. This version was tested in Players 8 Terrorized Chaos Sanctuary.

The most noticeable change is a significantly slower kill speed compared to the previous version. Elite monsters now require proper setup and typically three to five Echoing Strikes to defeat. In some cases, such as fighting Infector of Souls without Amplify Damage, up to ten attacks were necessary. While this may appear excessive compared to previous one-shot capability, the skill’s overall power, versatility in farming strategies, ease of gearing, immunity to Cannot Be Frozen, and built-in tools for managing low attack rating place it in a healthier position.

Not every build should be capable of one-tapping Players 8 content. If other builds are too powerful, those should be adjusted accordingly. In comparison to options such as Javazon, the relative power scale of the Echoing Strike Warlock appears more balanced.

Comparison to Other Melee Builds

When compared to Whirlwind Barbarian or other melee builds, the Warlock retains unique advantages. The ability to cast at Faster Cast Rate breakpoints while still dealing weapon damage would be considered extraordinary for most melee classes. From that perspective, the build remains in a strong position even after adjustments.

Using the Horizont set as a benchmark provides insight into reasonable endgame expectations. If an elite set cannot carry a build into endgame viability, that reflects poorly on the set itself. At this power level, the build may feel slightly underperforming, but it aligns more closely with how standard builds must function in Hell difficulty.

Players assembling optimized D2R items for Ladder Season 14 for the Warlock should focus on attack rating solutions and defense reduction tools, as these are now central to performance rather than optional bonuses.

Attack Rating and Defense Mechanics

Understanding how attack rating and defense interact is critical. Defense shredding is mandatory. Lethargy reduces monster defense by 44%. Hexbane not only grants attack rating but also reduces enemy defense by an additional 50%. Death Mark removes a flat amount of defense from bosses. When combined, these tools allow consistent hit chance unless the character is significantly underleveled.

Player level relative to monster level remains highly impactful. A difference of five to ten levels drastically changes effectiveness regardless of attack rating values.

Hex Purge Versus Hexbane

Hexbane’s damage is divided across all hits of Echoing Strike rather than adding flat magic damage to each individual hit. In contrast, Hex Purge can trigger multiple times from a single cast, resulting in three area-of-effect explosions rather than dividing damage across ten hits.

However, skill point allocation presents challenges. At level 86, sufficient investment into Demonic Mastery is required to summon two demons, while also maintaining fifteen points in Bind Demon. The Defiler, although powerful in theory, often underperforms due to its long cooldown.

Bind Demon Challenges

Bind Demon requires twenty points to reliably bind strong targets such as certain super uniques. Without that investment, finding a suitable demon becomes significantly more difficult. Reallocating points to reach twenty in Bind Demon may improve consistency but leaves fewer points for other essential skills, particularly in the early game.

There may be scenarios where Hexbane becomes a one-point investment, allowing points to be redirected elsewhere for better area-of-effect scaling through Hex Purge.

Ongoing Evaluation and Feedback

Further testing is required to fully evaluate the skill’s position after changes. Three hours of PTR testing is insufficient for a complete assessment, especially given uncertainty around optimal gear configurations. Insight remains extremely powerful due to its attack rating bonus, though it may not represent the final best-in-slot weapon.

A comprehensive evaluation of the changes will involve identifying which adjustments should be reconsidered, which should remain, and how the overall experience compares to expectations. Player feedback during this PTR phase is particularly important, as it provides developers with essential data for balance decisions.

Echoing Strike no longer dominates Players 8 content effortlessly, but it remains versatile, mechanically rich, and capable of strong performance when properly optimized. Whether additional tuning is necessary will depend on continued testing and community dialogue.
