Body Measurements and Garment Measurements: A Clear Dress-Shopping Note

Disclosure: prepared on behalf of ELVARA. This is a general shopping worksheet, not a first-hand garment review.

Two size charts can use similar labels while measuring different things. Before comparing numbers, identify what each chart describes. A body measurement and a garment measurement should not be treated as interchangeable.

Label the source of each number

Keep three separate entries: your current measurement, a familiar dress measured according to an explained method, and the selected retailer chart. Write the units beside every figure. If one chart uses centimetres and another uses inches, convert the units before comparing rather than comparing the numbers as printed.

Ask what the chart measures

A retailer may publish body guidance, actual garment dimensions or a broader size conversion. If the heading is unclear, ask which one applies to the selected dress. Do not borrow the answer from another style on the website.

Keep subtraction descriptive

Suppose an illustrative body measurement is 78 cm and a listed garment measurement is 82 cm. The numerical difference is 4 cm. That arithmetic alone does not establish whether the dress is comfortable, suitable or the correct size. Construction, intended fit and the measuring method still matter. Use the difference as a question to clarify, not a universal rule for choosing every dress.

Read length separately

A suitable width comparison does not determine where a hem will sit. Check the stated length and where it is measured from. Model height can provide context but does not predict another person's proportions.

Finish with the actual listing

Check material, lining, closures and explicit stretch information. A fitted photograph is not evidence that fabric stretches. Review current ELVARA dress listings alongside the labelled notes, then read delivery and return conditions. Resolve missing details before ordering or arranging alterations. The aim is a clear comparison supported by the selected product information, with uncertainty left visible.
