"Yeah, we're back, Tom—and I'm glad," replied Dick Rover. "This academy is basically our

second home now."

"You're right, Dick," added Sam Rover, the youngest of the three brothers. "I'd much rather be

here than stuck on the farm, even though Uncle Randolph and Aunt Martha are nice. The

farm is just too boring—"

"While here we get all the adventures we can handle," finished Tom with a grin. "I wonder

what this term will bring? The last few kept us plenty busy."

"I'm not hoping for any more outside trouble," said Dick, shaking his head seriously. "Our

enemies are taken care of, and I don't want to see or hear from them again."

"Neither do I—but we will, mark my words," replied Tom. "The Baxters won't leave us alone.

They're a tough bunch, and Buddy Girk is just as bad."

It was the start of the spring term at Putnam Hall Military Academy. The three Rover boys had

just arrived from Cedarville in the carryall, driven by Peleg Snuggers, the school's handyman.

Their old friends—Frank Harrington, Fred Garrison, Larry Colby, and others—were already

there, so the boys had plenty of company right away.

As they entered the big building, friendly Captain Putnam greeted each with a firm

For readers new to the series (from the earlier books The Rover Boys at School and *The

Rover Boys on the Ocean*): The Rover boys are three brothers—Dick (oldest), Tom, and Sam

(youngest). No one knows for sure if they're orphans. After their mother died, their father—

a wealthy mine owner and geological expert—left them with his brother Randolph Rover, an

eccentric man obsessed with scientific farming. Their father then headed to the west coast

of Africa to search for valuable gold mines. He disappeared into the interior with some

locals, and that was the last anyone heard of him, despite Randolph's efforts to find out

what happened.

All three boys were smart, fun-loving, and full of energy. To keep them out of trouble,

Randolph sent them to Putnam Hall, a top military school near the town of Cedarville on Lake

Cayuga in New York. There, they made many friends—and a few enemies.

Their main enemies were Arnold Baxter, who had once tried to steal a gold mine from their

father, and his son Dan, the former bully of Putnam Hall. Arnold's partner was the worthless

Buddy Girk, who had once stolen Dick's watch. Both men were now in jail for a major

robbery in Albany, thanks in part to the Rover boys helping bring them to justice. Dan was

also locked up for helping kidnap Dora Stanhope—Dick's close friend. The kidnapping was

ordered by Josiah Crabtree, a former teacher who wanted to marry Dora's wealthy widowed

mother for her money. The plan failed, Crabtree fled, and Dan took the blame.A winter had passed since those events. The boys had studied hard to catch up on lost time

from their ocean adventure, and each had been promoted to the next grade—much to

Randolph's satisfaction and Aunt Martha's joy.

the promotions. "I hope they make good use of the new term."

"They're good boys, Randolph," Aunt Martha replied. "They wouldn't be real boys if they didn't

act up sometimes. As for their boldness—they get that from their father. Poor man. If only

we knew what happened to him."

"Yes, it would lift a huge weight off our shoulders, Martha," said Randolph. "But we don't

know, and there seems no way to find out. I've written to every authority in Africa I can

think of."

"He must be dead," said Martha. "Otherwise he would have written or come home by now. He

wouldn't leave us in the dark this long."

"I can't believe my brother is dead—and the boys refuse to believe it either," replied Randolph.

"Dick told me before leaving for school that if we don't hear anything, he's going to Africa

one day to search for him himself.""To Africa! In that jungle, with dangerous natives? He'll be killed!"

"Maybe not. The boy is surprisingly clever with enemies. Look how well he, Tom, and Sam

handled Arnold Baxter and the others. It was impressive for boys their age."

"Still, I hate to see them in any more danger," said Martha.

"So do I," agreed Randolph. "But I believe they'll take care of themselves." And with that, the

topic was dropped for now.

walked the parade ground, checking out the new improvements Captain Putnam had made.

"No idea," replied Tom.

"Maybe he got scared and ran off for good," said Sam. "You'll be happy if he stays away from

Dora and her mother, right?"

"Definitely," said Dick. "I never want to see him again. He nearly worried Mrs. Stanhope to

death with his creepy behavior."

"I wonder how the Baxters feel being locked up?" asked Sam. "Arnold's used to it, but it's new

for Dan."

"Dan's just as bad as his father," added Larry Colby, who had joined them. "I was glad to hear

Mumps finally cut ties with the bully and turned over a new leaf."

"We all were!" said Tom. "By the way, Mumps is out West now, working as a clerk in the mining

business."

"A spell out West should straighten him out," said Dick. "It's a shame he ever fell under Dan

Baxter's influence. How's Arnold doing, by the way? He got pretty badly wounded in that

yacht fight."

"He's mostly recovered, according to Frank Harrington," replied Larry. "I bet he's furious at

you guys for putting him in jail."

"It was his own fault, Larry," said Dick. "If you do wrong, you face the consequences. Arnold

could have been a successful mine owner, and Dan a top cadet here. Instead, they ruined

their own lives—and now they have to live with it."

"My father used to say it takes all kinds of people to make a world," said Larry. "But we could

definitely do without the Baxters and Buddy Girk types."

"And the Josiah Crabtree type," added Sam. "Don't forget that slimy creep."

"Maybe Crabtree reformed, like Mumps," suggested Larry.

"Not a chance," said Tom. "I hated that guy and his oily tongue. I wish they'd caught him and

locked him up with the rest."

"Yeah, and then we could—" Sam started, but stopped suddenly. "Hey, Frank, why are you

running so fast?"

"Just got a letter from my father!" Frank Harrington panted as he reached them. "I knew

you'd want to hear this—Dan Baxter has escaped from jail, and the authorities have no idea
